Ch'ang-e, in a moment of desperation, swallowed the elixir and flew to the moon. When Hou Yi returned, he could only gaze at the moon in longing and call out to his wife. They would then set out a table, offer sacrifices and moon cakes in memory of her. This is how the tradition of worshipping the moon originated in the Mid-Autumn Festival.
