The Little Match Girl

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved to play in the snow. Every New Year』s Eve, she would go out into the cold winter night to look for matches to burn as she played. One year, she went out as usual, but this night something was different. The snow fell heavily and the temperature was very low. She wandered through the streets, looking for matches, but she couldn』t find any. She was cold and hungry, and she began to feel lonely and afraid.

As she walked, she came across an old woman who was sitting by the fire. The little girl asked for some matches, but the old woman only smiled and said, 「You know, my dear, that matches are not something to be had for the asking. They must be won.」

The little girl didn』t understand what she meant, but she decided to play a game with the old woman. She said, 「Then let me stay here and match-match all night long if I can』t get any elsewhere.」

The old woman smiled and handed her a box of matches. 「Go ahead, my dear,」 she said. 「But don』t forget to come back before morning.」

The little girl thanked her and began to play. She lit one match after another, watching them burn. But as she burned them, they did more than burn—they lit up a scene from her dreams. She saw a beautiful fireworks display and heard a wonderful concert. She was happy and excited, and she played on and on, until finally all the matches were gone.

She knew it was time to go home before morning, but she couldn』t bear to leave the world of wonder and joy she had found. So she decided to go back to the old woman』s house and ask for more matches. As she walked back through the snowy streets, she saw a group of children playing in the street. They were laughing and singing and having a wonderful time. She wanted to join them, but she knew she had to go back to the old woman first.

When she arrived at the old woman』s house, she knocked on the door and waited. But no one answered. She looked around and saw that the house was dark and empty. She knew that something was wrong, but she didn』t understand why. She wandered back out into the snowy streets, feeling lost and alone.

As she walked home, she realized that she had lost everything that mattered—her family, her friends, even her matches. But as she looked up at the stars in the sky, she knew that she had found something even more important—a world of wonder and joy that had been waiting for her all along.

She went home cold and hungry, but with a new understanding of life and a belief that anything was possible in the world of dreams. From that day forward, she was never lonely or afraid again. And every New Year』s Eve, she would light a match to remember that special night when she had found the world of wonder and joy that was waiting for her all along.
