As she played, she lit many matches and soon her hands were very cold and sore. But she didn't care because she was having so much fun. Then she wandered off into the woods and lost her way home. She sat down on a log and tried to light a match to see if she could find her way back to her family. But it was too cold and snowy out there for matches to stay lit for long.

Just then, a kind old man came walking through the woods and saw the little girl sitting on the log with a matchstick in her hand. He asked her why she was there all alone and in such bad weather. She told him her story and he was moved by her bravery and kindness. He took her home and she went back to her family that night with a new friend who loved her very much.
