The origin of Teacher's Day

On September 10, 1985, teachers from across the country welcomed their first Teacher's Day.

In March 1981, at the Fourth Session of the Fifth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, 17 CPPCC members of the China Democracy Promotion Association jointly submitted a proposal:

Case: It is recommended to determine the National Teacher's Day date and the content of the event.

Proposer: Xu Bozhen, Wu Yifang, Shi Nianhai, Li Yanye, Zhang Mingyang, Ye Zhishan, Xu Chubo, Zheng Xiaoyu, Ma Like, Huo Zhengzheng, Ge Zhicheng, Fang Ming, Wu Bao, Zhang Jingning, Ye Sheng, Tao Lei, Qiong Keling

Reasons: Teachers should shoulder the heavy responsibility of cultivating talents for the construction of the four modernizations and should enjoy a lofty social status. Comrade Hu Yaobang officially raised the issue of respecting teachers at the Second National Congress of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology. He pointed out that respecting teachers is not only a problem for students, but also members of our entire society, parents of all students, especially those at all levels of government. We must respect the teacher... Now that children have Children's Day and youth have Youth Day, we believe that the people's teachers who train them to become successors to the socialist grand cause should also have Teacher's Day...

The proposal was compiled by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference as No. 170.

The opinions of the CPPCC review are as follows: It is recommended that the State Council submit the research to the Ministry of Education.

Among the proposers, Ye Shengtao is the third chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party and the sixth vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Lei Jieqiong is the fourth chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party, the sixth vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and the vice chairman of the Seventh and Eighth National People's Congress Standing Committee. Xu Bozhen, Wu Yufang, Ge Zhicheng, and Ye Zhishan served as vice chairman of the Central Committee of the People's Republic of China. Zhang Mingyang, Ke Ling and Fang Ming were the vice chairman of the Democratic Progressive Committee of the Central Committee. Fang Ming is also the main sponsor and writer of the proposal.

Mr. Fang Ming Lao said that in fact, there is also Teacher's Day before liberation, which is June 6 of each year. In 1951, the Ministry of Education and the National Education Union announced that the "May Day Labor Day" was also the "Teacher's Day", but the result of the implementation was that Teacher's Day was gone. In the Cultural Revolution, teachers were degraded as "smelly old nine" and their social status was extremely low.

The Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China brought order out of chaos. Since 1980, the National Education Union has carried out a series of respecting and re-education activities, such as “respecting the age of education” and “five stresses and four beauty, and being a teacher”, which has improved the political and social status of teachers. However, it is not a cold day. As pointed out in the proposal, "respecting teachers and teaching is far from forming a social atmosphere. The incident of beating teachers has been heard. It is not common for educators to truly establish the idea of teaching and educating people for life." To truly improve the social status of teachers, teachers' festivals should be established in New China, so that teachers enjoy a lofty social status and are respected by the whole society. Thus, at the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in March 1981, the 16 CPPCC members of Fang Ming and Min Jin jointly submitted the proposal.
