很久以前，后羿向西王母求得一包不死藥，他拿回家和妻子嫦娥一起藏在箱子裡。但是，這件事被他的徒弟逢蒙知道了，逢蒙前去打探，趁后羿不在家時闖進家裡逼迫嫦娥交出不死藥，嫦娥怕逢蒙的陰謀得逞自己死在后羿回來之前，所以就自己吃了不死藥，身體就飄離地面，飛向天上去了。由於嫦娥牽掛丈夫，便飛落到離人間最近的月亮上成了仙。后羿回家後，只看到空中的月亮和妻子留下來的一封信，信中說：「我吃了不死藥，飛到月亮上成為神仙，希望你早日來到月亮看我們。」以後大家效仿嫦娥的樣子到月亮上找，由於這個原因，中秋節吃月餅也由此流傳至今。

After that, people copied Chang'e's way to go to the moon to look for her. Because of this reason, people eat moon cakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
