Poor miracle: one year from three to Peking University

Poor miracle: one year from three to Peking University

Almost everyone who knows Sun Yuchen feels that his admission to Peking University is a miracle.

In February 2007, when he participated in the Peking University Independent Admissions Interview because he won the first prize of the New Concept Composition Competition, the interviewer did not even know which province he was studying in Huizhou No. 1 Middle School.

He had never been admitted to Peking University before he was here. He was originally a science student, but he had to change his studies in liberal arts because his physical performance was always between two and thirty. Since then, his performance has improved, but until the end of the third semester of high school, still ranked in the 100-year-old.

When he was a freshman, he wrote "An Argumentation Question" in "Sprout" magazine, trying to prove to people that "high school can make up for any regrets in one year, as long as you make up your mind." He left his communication address at the end of the text and invited the middle school students to prove this subject with him. More than two years after the article was published, he received nearly 10,000 letters.

Today, he is about to finish his four-year undergraduate career with the No. 1 in the history of Peking University.

Immersed in the literary world, I can't extricate myself in the top ten in the whole class.

At the middle school stage, Sun Yuchen was never a “good student” in the eyes of teachers and classmates. When he was in China, he was enrolled in a boarding school. His memories of three years of life in the country were mostly related to online games. In order to play online games, he often goes home to rest, and at night his father sneaked to the Internet cafe after sleeping, and then rushed home before his father woke up in the morning.

Before the senior high school entrance examination, he suddenly "awakened", studied hard for six months, and stumbled into Huizhou No. 1 Middle School.

After entering high school, his enthusiasm for online games plummeted because he discovered new novels of interest. Influenced by the father who taught at the Chinese Department of the university, he contacted Wang Xiaobo's work and began to read all kinds of novels insanely. He said: "Everyone who indulges in the novel will inevitably have a tempter. My tempter is Wang Xiaobo."

Under the "temptation" of Wang Xiaobo's "Time Trilogy", he was immersed in the world of literature all day long. He describes his high school life like this:

"Change the history of Chinese and English in the curriculum to a novel or literature; stay in the library all day long; when you test the language, spend half an hour doing the essay topic, then spend two hours writing a 3000 The composition of the word was handed in, and then it was scored 10 points; spent a week squatting in the library to write experimental novels, written and handed to everyone to judge, as long as one person said that they did not like it, burn it, if everyone likes it After submitting the manuscript, then the sea sinks into the sea; the morning readings in the morning are all changed into poetry readings, and in the noisy ancient context of the whole class, the banner of the vernacular poems is raised..."

Accompanied by this kind of free and easy, it is the red light of the test results. In fact, it is inevitable that in addition to the class teacher's English class is not convenient to skip classes, most of the other time he is reading novels in the library. The whole class of 48 people, his performance "stable in the top ten countdown", the teachers' expectations for him is "to protect the big, rushing big."

Sun Yuchen at that time believed that the test-oriented education and the literary ideal were opposites, because the fundamental nature of the two was different. One was based on mechanical speed training and the other was based on talent. In his view, accepting the "all-round mediocrity" exam-oriented education is almost "disgusting and shameful". "The limited time and energy can't cover many subjects that are not good at it. Mathematics is really a tragic tragedy for a person who specializes in literature and history. "So he doesn't care about the test results, even if the whole school has a red light, it doesn't matter, just afraid to let parents know, "because they are already embarrassed to hit me, after all, I have grown taller than them."

Must jump into the river of exam-oriented education, although it may wash away the edges and corners

With two or three hundred degrees of mathematics and physics, Sun Yuchen had to choose to become a liberal arts student in his second year of high school. At this time, he found that he was no longer arbitrarily “reading books for reading” as he did in high school, but he began to desire to be recognized by others. He firmly believes that he has extraordinary talents, and many of his classmates "do not know what else in the world besides doing the problem."

But the reality has constantly frustrated him. "With more than 400 points, I can't find a reason for self-comfort."

He feels that there are always some graded rituals and details that make him "disgraceful" in exam-oriented education: according to the regulations of the school, the order of the seats in the examination should be arranged according to the ranking of the last exam. The classroom of his class is the first examination room. And every time he took the test, he moved to the third or even the fourth test room with a bag. During an exam, he saw that the same class of girls who had been in the top five of the grade had also reached the third examination room. He was a little gloating to ridicule her, but the girl just said an understatement: "I was sick during the last exam. , English did not test."

The strong feeling of hitting the wall made him begin to consider a complete break with the regular path of further studies. He began to find a way to find a way out for himself, a way out of the college entrance examination. At that time, he felt that participating in the college entrance examination was a compromise for the corresponding test education. "It is a rather shameful behavior." He firmly believes that his talents allow him to enter an ideal university through a path that does not take the college entrance examination.

With high expectations, he signed up for the 8th New Concept Composition Competition and Peking University's independent admission examination, but the results were unsuccessful. This had a great blow to him, and he began to realize that "you must jump into the river of exam-oriented education, although it might wash away the edges of my stone."

He set five requirements for himself: The first is to move all the books that are not related to the test to go home, leaving only one Hu Shi’s old-fashioned conversation; the second is that he never enters the library, and all the courses are indispensable. The third is to close the love of the teacher to obtain the knowledge of the test; the fourth is to ensure the time of self-study at night, 3 hours to actively conduct test-oriented training; the fifth is to develop a daily plan, and strictly complete.

With a score of 450 minutes and the above five requirements for his own, Sun Yuchen entered the third year. He secretly set a sprint goal for himself: Sun Yat-sen University, "the ultimate non-point thinking" is the alma mater of Renmin University of China and Wang Xiaobo.

Successfully completed the sprint from three books to Peking University in one year

The initial stage of Sun Yuchen's implementation of the five requirements is not obvious. He feels that in the exam-oriented education system, "bad students" have to pay more than "good students" every time they go forward. "As everyone knows, this year, teachers are not very willing to help the students." But he feels that he has already There is no choice. "When a person is dying, he only wants to live. There is no other purpose." In his view, by the sprint period of the third year of high school, the method is already secondary, and the most important thing is attitude and persistence.

Gradually, his performance approached 600 points, but the growth momentum slowed down. His performance has been between 590 and 600 for a long time, and he realized that he was in a bottleneck. In Guangdong Province, a college entrance examination score of around 600 points will mean that he is likely to be unable to qualify for a major university.

At this time, he was re-qualified for the ninth new concept essay contest. At the time, the distance from the college entrance examination was six months.

Both the teacher and the parents advised him not to go to Shanghai for a retest, because it would make him absent for at least two weeks. For a third year student who is in a bottleneck and needs to break through, the meaning of two weeks seems self-evident. However, Sun Yuchen felt that his "idealism began to re-emerge" and left all concerns to go to Shanghai for a retest.

It turns out that he made the right choice. He successfully won the first prize. At the subsequent university meeting, Liu Yuli, professor of the Chinese Department of Peking University, and Liu Mingli, the director of the admissions office, took a fancy to his idealism and gave him the qualification to participate in Peking University’s independent enrollment. At the time of the college entrance examination, 20 points will be accepted under the admission score. And this means that if you want to get into Peking University, he still needs to increase his score by 50 points in the remaining 5 months.

What made him feel amazing afterwards was that his most troublesome English had completely broken through the bottleneck since he took the first test after the "new concept". His English score never exceeded 100 points, and since that time Since the exam, I have never scored 110 points. The scores of other subjects are also steadily improving.

He later explained this "complete leap": everyone's potential is often suppressed by too low self-expectation, while too low self-expectation stems from external institutional oppression. He feels that the deep-seated problem of exam-oriented education lies in the score worship, emphasizing comprehensive mediocrity. "In the system of test-oriented education discourse, the so-called good students are all good grades, the bad students are all bad grades, the score evaluation becomes the moral value judgment, the personality is constantly negated by the score system, and it is not surprising that the broken cans are broken. In his view, the appropriate first prize of the "new concept" is a key factor for success.

In his footsteps, the college entrance examination is on schedule. He finally scored 115 points in language, 132 points in mathematics, 130 points in English, 146 points in total, 127 points in history, and 650 points in total scores. He successfully completed the sprint from three books to Peking University.

In the relatively loose and free learning environment of Peking University, he is like a duck. He first studied Chinese, and later studied history, and his performance ranked first in history. He served as the president of Peking University's Western Learning Society and represented Peking University in The Hague, the Netherlands, to participate in the World Model United Nations Conference, and was also awarded the top ten title.

At the end of the "A Discussion Question" that attracted nearly 10,000 letters, he wrote: "I believe that my talent has never been washed away by the river of exam-oriented education, but I have successfully challenged the exam-oriented education. In the end, I only have two hopes: First, I hope that those who have ideals should not bow to reality; second, I hope that everyone can help me with this topic. I hope it will be established in each of you."
