Examples of Welcome Words

Premier Zhou Enlai's speech at the welcoming President Nixon's banquet Mr. President, Mrs. Nixon, ladies and gentlemen, comrades, friends: First of all, I am pleased to represent Chairman Mao Zedong and the Chinese government to President Nixon and his wife, and others. The guests are welcome. At the same time, I also want to use this opportunity to represent the Chinese people to extend cordial greetings to the American people far from the Pacific. At the invitation of the Chinese government, President Nixon came to visit China, so that the leaders of the two countries have the opportunity to meet directly, seek normalization of relations between the two countries, and exchange views on issues of common concern. This is in line with the aspirations of the Chinese and American peoples. Active action is a pioneering work in the history of Sino-US relations. The American people are great people. The Chinese people are great people. The people of our two countries have always been friendly. For reasons that everyone knows, the exchanges between the two peoples have been interrupted for more than two decades. Now, with the joint efforts of China and the United States, the door to friendly exchanges has finally opened. At present, the normalization of relations between the two countries and the fight for tensions have become a strong desire of the Chinese and American peoples. The people, only the people, are the driving force behind the creation of world history. We believe that this common aspiration of our two peoples will one day be realized. The social systems of China and the United States are fundamentally different, and there are huge differences between the Chinese and American governments. However, such differences should not prevent China and the United States from establishing normal state relations on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence, and should not lead to war. The Chinese government publicly stated as early as 1955 that the Chinese people do not want to fight with the United States. The Chinese government is willing to sit down and negotiate with the US government. This is our consistent policy. We have noticed that President Nixon’s speech before coming to China also said: “The thing we have to do is to find some way to make us divergent without becoming an enemy in the war.” We hope that both sides candidly Exchange opinions, find out the differences between each other, and work hard to find common ground, so that the relationship between our two countries can have a new beginning. Finally, I recommend the health of President Nixon and his wife, the health of other American guests, the health of all the friends and comrades present, and the friendship between China and the United States.
