Investigation report: E-commerce in the eyes of college students
In recent years, many colleges and universities in China have set up e-commerce courses in succession. Northern Jiaotong University is one of the first universities in China to conduct e-commerce teaching. In 1992, it opened an elective course on Barcode Technology and Electronic Data Exchange. In 1996, this course was listed as a compulsory course for material management and international business management. In the newly developed ninth grade syllabus, "E-Commerce" is listed as a compulsory course for management engineering. In the teaching practice, Northern Jiaotong University has formed an all-round multimedia teaching system consisting of teachers' electronic lesson plans, students' electronic operations, interactive remote network teaching systems, and e-commerce network case teaching simulation experiments. As a pilot of the Ministry of Education’s remote online education, it has been implemented on the Internet.

So, how do college students think about e-commerce? At the end of 1999, a questionnaire survey on e-commerce was conducted with students of the Northern Jiaotong University jointly with the Electronic Commerce Association of Northern Jiaotong University. The survey was conducted in the form of a written questionnaire. There were 575 college students and 38 graduate students. These students came from all grades, covering telecommunications, economics, management, law, transportation and other majors. They were highly representative.
The survey consists of two parts. The first part is about e-commerce, including the following questions: 1. Do you know what e-commerce is? 2. Can you talk about your own understanding of the impact of e-commerce on society? 3. Can you tell the general process of e-commerce? 4. Do you know what EDI is? 5. Do you know about electronic money? The second part is the way to get e-commerce, including the following questions: 1. In addition to the class, what aspects do you usually know about e-commerce? 2. Please list the name of the specific newspaper you read the e-commerce paper. 3. Have you visited an e-commerce exhibition?
Awareness of e-commerce
Among the respondents, 60.5% of university students and 100% of graduate students expressed their understanding of the concept of e-commerce. According to the data, college students have paid more attention to e-commerce. The higher the degree of education, the deeper their understanding. Among the students who have a certain understanding of the concept of e-commerce, 23% think that e-commerce has a great influence on the society; 46% think that there is a certain impact, but it is difficult to form a scale in the short term; There are still difficulties, and 31% have limited influence on the people. This aspect shows that college students' understanding of the development of e-commerce and the impact on society is relatively calm. On the other hand, it also shows that there is still a certain distance between the cultivation of e-commerce talents in China and the needs of education and society.
This cannot but cause us to worry that e-commerce is developing at an unimaginably high speed, and can the current education and educators adapt to the needs of the market? When investigating the level of understanding of e-commerce, I found that there are many problems.
Among the students who have a clear understanding of the e-commerce process, only 32% of the university students and 80% of the MBAs, most of the non-economic management students' understanding of the specific trade process of e-commerce is still in the initial stage.
In terms of understanding of EDI, less than 9% of people said they had had an understanding; 4% of people can express their opinions on the application of EDI in e-commerce, and all of them are economic management students. . It can be seen that in the in-depth study of the system, e-commerce gradually reflects its discipline - mainly economic management. In this regard, economic management students have their professional advantages. However, the proportion is small, especially the status quo that no other professional understands.
In the survey of electronic money, only one person used electronic money online. Only 9 of the university students said they had done a special study on this, and they all concentrated on computer science and information communication. Only 4 of the graduate students said they had studied such problems. Another 10 people expressed interest in this. The number is quite low, accounting for only 2% of the total. E-commerce is an interdisciplinary field. In the key issues related to the development of e-commerce - financial electronic and trade security, students in electronic majors and legal majors have unique advantages, but have not yet attracted the attention of economic management profession. For the time being, there are not many students who really realize that e-money is close to themselves, and there are fewer students who have invested a lot of energy.
Learning path to e-commerce
The second part of the survey is mainly to understand the way students learn e-commerce knowledge, and to find out which articles published in the newspapers have the most citations. After analysis, except for the majors that offer e-commerce courses, most undergraduates use electronic magazines and newspapers to understand e-commerce knowledge. There are not many related knowledge from professional books and radio and television.
According to the survey data, the e-commerce papers cited by students come from 91 Chinese and English newspapers and periodicals. On the one hand, it reflects the students’ reading, and on the other hand, the media’s coverage of e-commerce is also increasing. It reflects that the current professional newspapers and periodicals of e-commerce in China have not yet appeared, and the propaganda methods for the public are still based on the popularization of the face, less involved in the specific implementation details, and there are not many newspapers and periodicals that introduce e-commerce knowledge systematically.
The media that are recognized by students in the popularization of e-commerce are mainly "Computer World", "Internet World", "Information and Computer", "Chinese Computer Users", "Market and Computer" and other publications. After further investigation, it was learned that in the top newspapers and magazines, in 1999, special columns or special lectures on e-commerce popularization were established. When people are eager to learn about e-commerce knowledge, choosing a series of newspapers and magazines is undoubtedly the first choice for readers. But no single publication accounts for more than 15%.
Finally, without any organization, most students have taken the initiative to go to the e-commerce exhibition to learn about the latest developments in e-commerce and the latest technology applications.
Through the survey, we found that college students are very interested in e-commerce. Many people understand e-commerce by reading extracurricular materials or participating in exhibitions, and learn e-commerce knowledge purposefully. However, they lack systematic and comprehensive learning. Under the trend that e-commerce has become the main means of trade in the 21st century, if the popularization of e-commerce and education work can be further improved, it will promote the development and growth of e-commerce in China.
