Classic inspirational article: Love wants to learn to let go
The 17-year-old Thomas lay on the couch, his left leg was plastered, and the slim body was just the size of the couch. In the football training, his ankle bone was accidentally injured. I warned him in advance to be careful, but I didn't expect it to happen.
Since he was discharged from the hospital yesterday, he has been stuck on the game console. How long have you been playing? Maybe he should be hungry. “How do you feel? Does the leg still hurt?” I asked. “I prepared a protein shake and juice for breakfast. You liked it when you were young!”
"Oh... um," the son snorted, his fingers still dancing back and forth on the various game control buttons, his eyes staring at the TV screen.
“Do you have some plaid muffins?” I went on to say, “They are rich in calcium.”
Thomas’ eyes still didn’t leave the screen: “Thank you mom, I’m not hungry at all.”
"I thought these things would make you happy," I said. "The taste of leg injuries can be uncomfortable. If you want to get better soon, you must eat more. I am your mother, it is my responsibility to take care of you."
Thomas shook his head and still didn't look at me. "I am fine, mom, really okay."
I walked down the stairs and couldn't help but look back. Suffering such a heavy injury, my son still does not need my help. Doesn't he need me anymore?
Where did the cute little boy in my memory go? When I was young, Thomas relied on my mother. Walking in the green grass, he will hold my hand tightly. I cooked a protein shake for him and made his favorite juice. He will share the secret of his little inner world with me while eating. Although it is a childish thing, it makes me very happy.
When Thomas was 15 years old, everything changed. I became the last person in the world who he didn't want to approach. Although sometimes he will ask me what I think, but look at what happened this time, I told him the danger of many rugby, he was still injured. What should I do to make him understand that he still needs my mother?
Thomas didn't talk to me all day. When I sent the dinner to his bedroom, he only said "thank you" and didn't look at me. I stood beside him stupidly, expecting him to say something, but nothing. I lost ground and went downstairs, looking forward to receiving comfort from her husband Rick.
"What happened to Thomas?" I suddenly burst into tears.
"He is in adolescence."
"He is pushing me away from me, why? I want to be his mother, he still needs me!"
"Give him some space, this is what he needs most," Rick said. "He is close to adulthood."
I frowned, how could Rick understand my feelings, and he and Thomas had always been good.
A few weeks later, Thomas returned to school. His life at home is really fast. I suggested driving him to school, but he refused to show me his backpack in front of his classmates.
He landed on one leg, slammed his backpack, grabbed his crutches, and walked toward the school building. "I am no longer a child," he said back. But baby, I am still your mother, why not let me help you? I shed tears in my heart.
That night, I tossed and turned, and I was extremely depressed. I kept praying to God: Ask the Lord to tell me how to be the mother Thomas wants. Everything has not changed, until a month later, I took Thomas to the hospital for review.
"He recovered well," the doctor said. "You can walk on a cane."
"Doctor, are you sure he can carry a cane?" God, what am I talking about. I don't want to let Thomas recover. My need for him has exceeded his need for me. He is my child, I can't bear to let him leave me.
“Touch here,” the doctor said, pointing to the place where Thomas’ bones broke. “When the muscle tissue is repaired, it will make the bones stronger. So, the best treatment now is to let it go.”
Let it be natural? Is this what Thomas's leg is or something else? That night, I quietly opened the Bible. The doctor's words reminded me of a poem: "When you hurry, grab it, let go when you let go." For so many years, I have been holding on to Thomas’s hands to raise, educate and protect him. It turned out that letting go is also part of being a mother.
A few days later, I wrote "I am proud of you, I pray for you, I love you - your mother" on a card, and then stuff it under Thomas's pillow.
Thomas never mentioned the card. According to my guess, he must have thrown it. However, this is the best way for me to express my maternal love to him without affecting him. Gradually, I am happy again. I no longer bind his decision as I was a child, questioning his choice. Many times, I keep my opinions and I don't stop talking about it.
One morning, Thomas packed up his bag and was about to go to school. "I may come back late after school for a while, I have to practice weightlifting." He threw away his cane and walked outside the door, leaving me with a tall, strong back. I would like to tell him that you are better off with a cane. In addition, it is not suitable for weightlifting now. But when it comes to the mouth, it becomes "Thomas, I love you."
He turned to look at me and said, "Mom, I love you too."
"Your mother and son seem to be one again," said the husband. "What mysterious seasonings have you added to the protein shake?" I smiled. How can I make my husband understand that sometimes the best way to catch love is to let go completely.
Just as Thomas’s 18th birthday is coming, I am going to clean up in his room. In the top drawer of the cabinet, I saw the toys that Thomas had collected in childhood. Huh? what is that? A tearful tears came out. I saw that very familiar card! It is so conspicuous with the treasures of the Thomas collection. I stroked the words written by myself, so I couldn't speak.
At this moment, there was a loud laugh in the yard, and Thomas and her husband were throwing rugby. I can't help but notice that he is much taller than his father.
The husband’s words are correct. Soon, there will be one more man in the family. However, in my heart, he will always be my baby.
