The tertiary hospital is a hospital that provides medical and health services across the region, the city, and the whole country. It is a medical prevention technology center with comprehensive medical, teaching, and scientific research capabilities. Its main function is to provide specialist medical services, solve critical and difficult diseases, accept secondary referrals, conduct business technical guidance and training for lower-level hospitals; complete the training of various senior medical professionals and undertake the tasks of provincial and above scientific research projects; Participate in and guide the prevention of primary and secondary.

The delineation, layout and setting of the first, second and third-level hospitals shall be decided by the regional health authorities in accordance with the unified planning of the medical and health service needs of the population. The level of the hospital should be relatively stable in order to maintain the complete and rational operation of the tertiary medical prevention system.

According to the comprehensive level of hospitals, hospitals in China can be divided into three levels and ten categories, namely: First and second level hospitals are divided into A, B and C. The tertiary hospitals are divided into special, A, B, and C.

The current hospital grading standards in China are mainly based on the benchmarking of hospitals at all levels.
