Shen Congwen, formerly known as Shen Yuehuan, pen name Hume, Jiachen, Shangguanbi, Ruo Ruo, etc., milk name Maolin, the word Chongwen. In Fenghuang County, Hunan Province, the grandmother Liu is a Miao nationality, his mother Huang Suying is a Tujia, and his grandfather Shen Hongfu is a Han nationality. Therefore, Shen Congwen's national identity can be any of these three ethnic groups, but Shen Congwen is more interested in the Miao nationality and describes the Miao in his literary works of more than 95%. From this we can see that Shen Congwen is looking at himself as a Miao people in the depths of his heart.

Shen Congwen is a writer and historical relic researcher. At the age of 14, he joined the ranks of the Xiangchuan River. In 1924, he began to write literary works, and wrote and published novels such as "Changhe" and "Biancheng". He taught at Qingdao University from 1931 to 1933. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he went to the Southwest Associated University to teach. In 1946, he returned to Peking University to teach. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he worked at the Chinese History Museum and the Institute of History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He mainly engaged in the study of ancient Chinese history. He died in Beijing in 1988.
