To be successful, you only need to do two things*. You may be lucky enough to do one of these things and it's a success, but it's rare—it's usually the case that someone else has done another part for you.
If you don't have any skills that you can value, learn some. This is your future. We have Khan Academy, Wikipedia and Software Academy, as well as your knowledge of the world's treasures. Use them.
Then do something that can come out and say. Make it cool. Make it fun. Take the time to do it. Don't have any scruples. Even if it's the least valuable thing you've ever done, as long as you think it's worth mentioning, make it. It's easy because you're doing something that you think is cool, you're interested, and if you find it really doesn't have value, it's better because you don't have to spend time maintaining it!
Next, find out about the people you want to be able to work with. Have a drink and talk to them about your thoughts. Relax. They may be as interested in this idea as you are. Even if not, because this is your work, you know what you are talking about. This is the most important. Again, this is easy because it's about what you think is cool, fun, and something you've made. There is an added bonus, because many people are participating in such activities and are talking about cool and interesting things, so you are well suited to go there.
Maybe you don't believe, for those who make things and then tell others, how many chances are waiting for them. This is the way you move forward in the entrepreneurial world. You make something interesting and then tell everyone. Then someone will contact you, give you a job opportunity, give you an investment, and so on. You will meet a lot of people who think you are doing cool and can be friends with them. You have earned a reputation for yourself: this is a person who has done something cool. Later, when someone wants to do something that has something to do with your cool stuff, they will think of you first.
Ciarán McCann and I started researching and developing an HTML5 game engine and blog in the first year of college. We have not finished because we went to Ericsson internship in the summer of the second year. Now, I am going to GameClosure, and Ciarán is going to Demonware. We are always doing things and then telling people.
