Inspirational speech

Being forced to make money, I don’t want to make it.

Let's start with Moore's Law. Everyone knows this. In 1965, the technology industry development notice proposed by Gordon Moore, one of the founders of Intel chips, proposed this law: the number of integrated transistors on integrated circuits doubled every 18 months, and then The performance of the electronic chip will also be doubled. In other words, if you spend 10,000 yuan today to buy a high-end computer, its performance will increase exponentially after 18 months, and the price will remain the same.

This law is still valid today. The role of this law in economics is that many people are not eager to update their original electronic equipment, but wait a moment, wait until the higher-end equipment appears, buy a product lower than the highest-grade equipment, so that The life cycle of your existing equipment becomes longer, and at the same time, when the equipment is updated, the products with greatly improved performance can be updated at a relatively reasonable price.

However, the side effect of this law is that the product development department and the manufacturer often feel that they are falling into the pit, because the performance improvement alone cannot allow the user to immediately focus on the new products put on the market, but it is new. The emergence of products has boosted the sales of the “highest performance products” of the previous stage. Because, after the launch of the new product, the old "poor product of a grade" will plummet.

Microsoft seems to have jumped out of this strange circle. Once Microsoft's new products are launched, it will immediately lead to a new round of hardware-to-software updates. This Microsoft model has become the hottest topic in the next generation of market analysts and economics classes.

A more reliable explanation is the law of a new interdisciplinary field of science and technology: Andy-Beer's Law. "What did Andy offer, Bill will digest what."

Intel’s president Andy Grove, every time a new generation of hardware platforms is launched, Microsoft’s president Bill Gates immediately developed an improved version of the operating system for the hardware or simply introduced a new operating system. Upgrade your own related software products and eat all the performance of the new chips.

When a 386 computer was used, it needs to be started with a floppy disk after booting. It takes about one minute to enter the DOS system. It takes another minute for a high-end computer to enter the Windows 8 system. That is to say, if the horizontal comparison, the performance of the computer is increased by a thousand times, but the time required to operate the software is not really reduced.

Because, Bill has eaten all of Andy's hardware performance.

And we are still smugly talking about people, see, how high my computer configuration. In fact, in terms of work efficiency, it is not much different from an earliest computer.

Because the software is bulky, the requirements for the hard disk are also high, and the memory requirements are also high, and the startup and running speeds have no advantage compared with the low version of the current year. Ten years ago, the computer could not run the current program. You must replace the new computer with Moore's Law. And the washing machine and car that were used ten years ago are still used well.

People follow the progress of science and technology, self-deception and frequent replacement of electronic equipment, the function has indeed improved, but in terms of efficiency, there is no real change.

This is the side effect of Moore's Law. And the reason that people have to follow the advancement of technology to update equipment is Andy-Beer's law: you don't update the hardware, the software does not support it at all.

The iron law of this law is that, on the hardware, Andy's Intel is the leader. In software, Bill's Microsoft is the industry standard. If the rest of the people don't want to be eaten, just keep a scalp to keep up. This soft and hard giant dominates all the trends in the industry. At that time, Microsoft's Windows 7 system was not officially listed. As a result, in almost two years, almost all computer users did not need to update their computer hardware, which made HP, Dell, Asus and other manufacturers suffer big losses due to poor efficiency. They collectively asked Microsoft to introduce a new generation of operating systems as soon as possible.

In other words, they are forcing Microsoft to make money. You don't make money, I don't have the money to earn. You must do your best and you are qualified to make the rules of the game so that second-rate followers and imitators have to bite their teeth to follow up without a retreat.

This is a Microsoft-style success and one of the specific manifestations of Andy-Beer's Law.
