Learning Physics Demonstration Report - Lightning Rod

First, the purpose of the demonstration

There are many forms of gas discharge, such as corona discharge, arc discharge and spark discharge. The demonstration process and conditions of spark discharge are observed.

Second, the principle

First, the distance between the tip electrode and the ball electrode is equal to the plate electrode. The tip electrode is discharged while the ball electrode is not discharged. This is because the distribution of charge on the conductor is related to the radius of curvature of the conductor. The smaller the radius of curvature on the conductor, the more charge builds up, the stronger the electric field between the two poles, and the air layer is broken down. The less the opposite, the weaker the electric field between the two poles, and the air layer is not broken down. When the distance between the tip electrode and the plate electrode is greater than the distance between the ball electrode and the plate electrode, the electric field therebetween is weak and cannot penetrate the air layer. At this time, the distance between the spherical electrode and the plate electrode is the closest, and the discharge can only occur here.

Third, the device

A tip electrode and a ball electrode and a plate electrode.

Fourth, the phenomenon demonstration

Let the tip electrode and the ball electrode be at the same distance from the plate electrode. The tip electrode is discharged while the ball electrode is not discharged. Then, the distance between the tip electrode and the plate electrode is greater than the distance between the ball electrode and the plate electrode, and the discharge occurs between the ball electrode and the plate electrode.

V. Discussion and thinking

When lightning storms, it is best not to walk on open and flat fields. why?
