Computing Center Report
I am the first time to do a report on debriefing. I want to say that my job description is different from the competition. I don’t talk about my own advantages. I want to summarize the gains and losses, experience and lessons of my work for several years, and propose the direction of my future work.
In addition, when it comes to the completed tasks and achievements, it should be pointed out that this is the result of the joint efforts of all the comrades. I am grateful to all the comrades in the four years for working together and working hard and supporting me.
l Understanding of the basic tasks and development direction of the computing center
As the computing center of the High Energy Institute, the Computing Center determines its fundamental purpose of serving high-energy physics research. The basic tasks are the construction, operation, maintenance management and development of the computing environment necessary for large scientific experiments such as research networks, experimental data storage, and experimental data batch processing.
Due to the advancement of computer technology, the original computer can only be purchased in a unified manner. The centralized computer is replaced by a more powerful and technologically advanced server, workstation, or even a microcomputer. The elimination of the VAX machine is a sign of the times. The decentralization of computing power and the development of network technologies have made the basic tasks of computing centers very different. Through the development of the international large-scale high-energy physics experiment base, as the scale of the experiment has become larger and larger, the amount of data has increased by orders of magnitude, and their computing centers have undergone transformation into network centers and data centers. Our development is the same as in foreign countries. After the completion of BEPC-II, the amount of data will increase by two orders of magnitude. The computing center has completed the transition to the network center and is moving to the data center, which is an inevitable trend.
At present, we have a great technical gap with the famous high-energy physics experiment bases abroad. There are many technical problems in this development process. We must study the latest advanced technologies from abroad to meet the needs of physicists. And keep up with the pace of the world. The advanced technologies we must study in recent years are:
1. SAN-based data storage technology, including data management and database
2. Large PC-FARM, parallel computing, task segmentation and load balancing
3. Grid calculation
4. Object-oriented methods and techniques
5. Advanced network technology
6. System and network security technology
l Reform and research team building
In 1999, the on-demand and post-employment implementation of the reform of the research laboratory was not completely completed due to the loss of personnel in the computing center. In addition to the long-term illness, early retirement, and retiring, each comrade only took up the job and was hired. However, we have done very seriously in the setting of the subject and the arrangement of key positions. We resolutely stopped the long-term lack of financial support and long-term no progress, and proposed a new topic with a promising future. Under the supervision of the leaders, we cancelled the full-time staff and reduced the system maintenance personnel from 8 to 4 people; combine the information group with the network. In the absence of competitive enthusiasm, the person in charge of each topic will be arranged by the room. In particular, after the country increased its financial support for the Institute, it approved the campus network improvement and the two major issues of the SAN, which greatly promoted the formation of the computing center's scientific and technological team. The person in charge of each project is very responsible, and the above two topics have formed a strong research team.
l Research group and research situation
Before 1999, there was no decent research topic other than the “hacking prevention software development” that Xu Weisheng researched from the Academy of Sciences. In 1999, the state increased its financial support. Based on the research needs of BES and the needs of BES in recent years, combined with the development direction of the computing center, the computing center proposed the “high-energy campus network transformation” and “building a new generation network based on SAN”. "Distributed data processing and storage environment" two major issues, and established a research group. Together with the system maintenance operation group and the network security group, there are four research groups in the whole room.
The "High Energy Institute Campus Network Transformation" research group consists of all members of the network group, as well as the maintenance and operation of the entire network. The project of “High-energy Campus Network Reconstruction” began to investigate in the fourth quarter of 1999. In 2000, the construction of the new campus network was basically completed. This year's mission is to improve and optimize the network, including strengthening the network from security. Through the construction of the new campus network, the business knowledge of members of the network group has been greatly improved, and many comrades have their own business expertise. At the same time, the cohesiveness and combat effectiveness of the network group have also been greatly improved, forming a team that can be safely handed over to their tasks.
The system group was originally only responsible for the maintenance and operation of the computer system. After the reform of the research laboratory in 1999, the computing center concentrated on outstanding talents and graduate students to set up a SAN project group, and researched and prepared to build the next generation computing environment with Yang Dajian. SAN is a new technology developed in the past two or three years. We are the first in China to study and plan to implement and implement it. The equipment is expensive and quite difficult. The research team has done a lot of research work in more than a year, and has carefully evaluated and tested some manufacturers' solutions, laying a solid foundation for building a new generation of data processing and data management environment to reduce the risk of purchasing equipment. The research team is expected to implement it in the second half of this year, and build a SAN system based on file management from the end of the year to the beginning of next year.
The system maintenance and operation team consisting of four comrades is responsible for the maintenance of several computing platforms. They used to be technically less demanding attendants. In the past few years, the computing center paid attention to their training and improved learning conditions. They also worked hard to learn business knowledge and gain experience. Now they have completed the transition from the duty officer to the system administrator.
In the past few years, the network security research team led by Xu Weisheng has undertaken several major cybersecurity research tasks of the state and the academy, and won the first prize of the Academy of Science and Technology Progress and the second prize of the country. The research group pays attention to the commercialization and industrialization of research results, provides network security consulting and services for many units in the society, and has achieved good social benefits and has a certain reputation in the society. The group operates differently from the other three research groups. It cooperates with other entities in the society, introduces external unit funds, uses external unit cooperation personnel, and shares research results with external units. It should be said that the computing center only gives them loose conditions, and there is no special support, and they show strong vitality.
These research groups in the Computing Center have an active academic atmosphere, frequent academic activities, and continuous progress in the subject.
l Complete the running task
The computing center completes the computing platform and network operations every year. The maintenance of the computing environment is not like the comrades imagined, just buy a computer and watch it. Computers and networks continue to increase, change, change, and eliminate according to the needs of scientific research. There are many problems waiting to be dealt with every day. In addition to daily maintenance, there are a few big things. Every summer accelerator is down. It’s the busiest time for us. Because everyone is not so busy with computers and networks, the computing environment can do a lot of moves, every time. The whole room worked together.

l International cooperation
In the past four years, five comrades have been sent to participate in the cooperation. The four comrades sent to KEK have done a good job, and they have made great gains in their business, and they have greatly promoted the work of our room. Their work abroad has given a good impression to their foreign counterparts, consolidating the relationship between the computing center and the KEK Computing Center. There was one person who failed to send. Liu Qingjun sent to Fermilab in the middle of the United States to find another job, seriously damaged the cooperation between our institute and Fermilab, and brought great difficulties to the work arrangement of the computing center.
Invite foreign experts to visit the computing center twice. In 1998, CERN experts were invited to help us establish the first PC-FARM of the High Energy Institute. In 1999, he invited the director of the KEK Computing Center and the head of the network team to visit and discuss the cooperation between the two computing centers, which promoted cooperation with KEK.
In preparation for the CHEP2001 International Academic Conference, I went abroad to participate in the CHEP International Conference twice in 1998 and 2000. Participating in the CHEP98 conference in 1999 and visiting the SLAC Computing Center was a great achievement, which played a key role in shaping my understanding of the academic research direction of the Computing Center.
International cooperation is an important way for us to track advanced foreign technology. In the past, we did not have a fixed channel for international cooperation. We hope that the leaders can consider the participation of the computing center when participating in foreign physics experiment cooperation, so that our comrades have the opportunity to participate in the front line work.
l Improvement of research environment
During my four years in office, I have paid more attention to the improvement of the research environment. With the support of the leaders and relevant units, the following environmental improvement work was done at the Computing Center:
1. The machine room has updated 9 air conditioners and installed new fans.
2. Updated the floor and bracket of the computer room, which is beautiful and safe.

5. Toilet renovation
6. Air conditioning installed in the second floor office

The computing center’s own flower room development fund has also done a lot to improve the research environment:
1. In 1998, Hua Development Fund purchased tens of thousands of yuan to purchase data machine pools, microcomputers, laptops and fax machines.
2. In 1999, the water purifier, electric freezer and microwave oven were installed.
3. In 2000, the Flower Development Fund purchased more than 40,000 yuan for multimedia projectors.
4. In 2000, the Flower Development Fund was used for more than 40,000 yuan for the installation of 10 air conditioners in the second floor office and conference room.
5. In 2001, the Flower Development Fund installed nearly 60,000 yuan to install the computer room monitoring system.
The Computing Center Network Security Task Force also actively hired people to clear the weeds in front of the hall, planted 10 persimmon trees, trimmed shrubs, branches and flowers near the hall, and replaced the lampshades to beautify the environment.
l Problems and difficulties
1. The first is the issue of talent. In the past few years, the brain drain has been severe, and the graduate students who have cultivated themselves cannot keep it. There are many reasons for this. In the past few years, my research funding was insufficient, there was no decent research topic, and the treatment of researchers was too low. I hope that the knowledge innovation project will attract and retain young talents. However, it is mainly up to the cultivation and growth of talents from existing young researchers, and it is hoped that the old comrades in some key positions will bring the successors in two or three years. With the continuous development of information technology, the task of the computing center is becoming more and more arduous. At present, the quality and quantity of personnel in the computing center are difficult to meet the needs. I hope that future leaders will attach importance to and strengthen support for computing centers.
2. Leading the team, I am the director and I have no deputy director for four years and a branch secretary for two years. The opinions have been reflected to the party committee office many times. This abnormal situation has two major drawbacks. First, people's energy is limited, it is impossible to cover everything, and work will be wrong. Second, no one is negotiating, no one is supervising, and it is easy to do wrong. I hope that this time I will be able to put the team in line and get on the right track.
3. The work of the Network Security Group and the work in it are not well integrated. This is mainly my responsibility. Nowadays, network security is already a very prominent problem. It is very necessary to solve the problem of network security by playing the role of network security group. Now it is also the best solution to solve the problem of network security group and other groups. Opportunity.
4. There are also many unsatisfactory places in the work of the computing center. The services provided by the computing center for the whole office are not entirely satisfactory, and the comrades of the computing center also feel that the efforts made have not been recognized by the comrades. In this respect, because the technology is not well mastered, the system and equipment often have problems. On the other hand, the service awareness and communication with the users are not enough. Both of these aspects need improvement.
5. How the work of the calculation center works with the work of the physicist is also a difficult problem in the work. Our work goal is to serve the physicist, hope to get the support and participation of the physicist, and everyone aim at the high goal of the international level. We hope to work together and don't do everything.
6. Duty problem. The computing center has to arrange 38 to 41 classes per month. Because of the tight staff, there is no change of time and no overtime pay. The value of a class is 10 yuan from the post savings. As a result, it is very difficult to arrange the duty. We hope that the access control of the computer room can be installed as soon as possible. With the cooperation of the access control and monitoring system, the computing center will be unattended on the premise of ensuring safety and solve the problem of difficult duty in our room.
l Conception of future work
I think the first is the positioning of the computing center. As mentioned at the beginning of the report, the computing center will develop to the network center and data center. In recent years, the task is to do a good job in SAN system research, build a storage system managed by small hierarchical data and PC-FARM to meet BES-II, Yangbajing and other scientific research needs, and build a large-scale technology. Data processing and storage environment to meet the needs of BEPC-II and international large-scale cooperation projects. The network needs to be continuously improved to increase the bandwidth of exports, improve security, and improve services.
The second is talent and research teams. It is necessary to strengthen the work of cultivating talents on the basis of the existing ones, and to stress the burden on young scientific and technological personnel, and constantly put forward higher requirements, and boldly use them according to their specialties. I do not advocate for the young comrades' administrative positions that can develop into academic leaders. The heavy and trivial affairs will seriously affect his academic development. Such "promotion" is enough to ruin his future. I advocate that such comrades take the lead in research on topics. Of course, I hope that young comrades will learn and improve their ability to coordinate and organize and lead their work, and learn to be a good cadre in the future. The future of the High Energy Institute belongs to young people. There are always some red and specialized people who will take up the position of scientific research leadership.
The third is how to organize future work in accordance with the requirements of knowledge innovation. I haven't thought about it yet. I feel that it is not just to carry out research room reforms in accordance with the requirements of entering the knowledge innovation project, not just to compete for jobs. It is to be linked to a first-rate research institute that is built in the world. We must build a matching, advanced computing center while building BEPC-II. I feel that we must participate in the LHC's cooperation in computing. Otherwise, high-energy physics in the world will have no place. Participating in LHC cooperation not only costs a lot of money, but also requires a lot of hard and technical preparations to fill the huge gap between us and the world.
l How to do a good job in the research room director
1. Know the positioning, tasks and development direction of the laboratory in the laboratory.
2. Pay attention to the new developments in this world of expertise.
3. Always give yourself new goals, then steadfastly move toward the goal and never give up.
4. To grasp the backbone.
5. Everyone has advantages and disadvantages, and they are the same. Therefore, they must be equal and sincere to others; when they use people, they should foster strengths and avoid weaknesses, and encourage everyone's enthusiasm.
6. Be tolerant of others and be strict with yourself.
7. Treat people with fairness, have no affinity for comrades, and do not engage in small circles.
8. Be concerned with each comrade and safeguard their interests.
