Investigation on the intention of college students studying abroad

The history of Chinese students studying abroad can be traced back to the end of the Qing Dynasty. So far, they have gone through three stages. When the Qing government reformed the law, they sent a group of young people to study industrial technology in the West, so as to achieve the "teachers and skills to control the country." the goal of. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China in the 1930s, a group of young people were far away from the ocean and seeking knowledge outside the domain. It also includes some early revolutionaries of the Communist Party. After liberation, due to China’s position in the Cold War, the Soviet Union was the main country before studying abroad. After 1978, studying abroad has entered a new high tide. According to statistics, between 1978 and 1996, there were a total of 270,000 students studying abroad in the world, including 44,000 in the country, 86,000 in the public, and the remaining 139,000 went abroad at their own expense. The number of Chinese scholars who have obtained Ph.D. degrees in science and engineering in the United States has exceeded the number of Chinese doctors. In just 95 years, 2,751 Chinese students obtained doctoral degrees in the United States, accounting for 10% of the total number of doctors who were admitted to the United States in the same year, ranking first among students from all over the world.

In 1998, Beijing Century Blueprint Market Research Co., Ltd. randomly selected 301 college students from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Northern Jiaotong University and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to conduct an investigation to understand their own intentions to study abroad. view.

First, you ask me where I am going, I am pointing at the direction of the sea.

In our survey of 301 college students in five universities, 211 were interested in going abroad, accounting for more than 70%, indicating that studying abroad has become a mainstream choice for college students. Relevant analysis shows that science and engineering students have significantly more intentions to go abroad than liberal arts students.

Professor Gan Zikai from the Department of Physics of Peking University said that in the past three-thirds of the students in the physics department of the school have gone abroad, and there are currently more than 500 people in the United States. Tsinghua’s Shuimu Tsinghua BBS couldn’t send a message this summer. Thirty-five people in the Tsinghua Computer Department received a total of 89 foreign university scholarships this year, which means that if they want to leave, they can almost go. We can note that going to some departments of famous schools such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, and China University of Science and Technology, abroad has become a regular choice for undergraduates after graduation. Just like going to Beijing to study, you have to fight for Beijing.

Second, the preferred place - the United States

In this survey, among the 211 college students who intend to go abroad, the number of people who want to go to the United States is 166, accounting for more than three-quarters. Except for the United States, the two-thirds are Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom, but they are less than one-tenth of the total.

According to historical data, from the 1978-1996 period, there were 135,000 Chinese students going to the United States, accounting for 50% of the total number of Chinese students studying abroad during this period. Although the history of the United States is short, the university is full of schools, and its university education is bred by its high degree of openness. Moreover, the United States is an immigrant country, so it is relatively easy to find employment after the completion of the school. The United States naturally becomes the first choice for Chinese students. Every year in July and August, you can stand at the entrance of the US Embassy in Xiushui East Street for a while, you can feel the same heat wave as summer.

In this survey, an open-ended question was set up to allow respondents to talk about their views on studying abroad. The results show that college students tend to explore the value and significance of going abroad from both personal and national perspectives. This is probably related to our education direction. Many students emphasize that going abroad is a good thing, but after returning to school, they should return to the country to contribute to the motherland. As Zhou’s Zhou students said, “good birds choose to live in wood, but they should not forget this.” Some students think that the country should also create Good conditions attract overseas students to return to China; others also believe that people have their own aspirations and cannot be forced.

China, like other developing countries, has more to go out and less to come back. The phenomenon of brain drain. These international students, who have received world-class education and have a personal understanding of the actual operation of the developed capitalist economy, are indeed necessary for the development of the country. But how can I come back and what will come back should be a serious consideration. What can the government do and do to get them back?

The retention of talent is a form of competition among nations. Driven by the wave of globalization, the cross-border movement of talents will become more and more frequent. Studying abroad is the proper meaning of self-development for individuals. China has never had such an urgent need to be accepted by the world. If we want to retain talent, the empty country and national concept have not attracted much attention to international students. We should consider reforming the domestic competitive environment. If we can really cultivate a soil suitable for the survival and development of talents, the return of international students is a natural thing. It is not impossible to transform China’s talent flow into a superpower.
