Southern Tourism Education Investigation Report Zhang Yuxi

In late May 2004, the author took the opportunity to participate in the 6th National Biodiversity Symposium in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, and took the roads of Kunming, Hangzhou and Shanghai to inspect and investigate several early institutions of higher learning in China. And has conducted extensive exchanges with the responsible persons of tourism professionals and tourism experts of relevant units.
On the afternoon of May 21, the author first met with Professor Tian Weimin, Dean of the School of Business Administration and Tourism Management of Yunnan University. Professor Tian enthusiastically introduced me to the teaching, research and teacher construction of Yunda Tourism Management. According to Professor Tian, Yunda’s tourism management major is now a key specialty of Yunnan Province. The profession was formally established in 1992 and was originally toughened in the original foreign language department of Tourism English. In 1996, he obtained a master's degree in tourism management, and in 2003, he began to have a doctoral degree in tourism management. At present, the tourism major of Yunnan University is very strong, with 27 employees. In the teacher's establishment, they pay attention to the absorption of various talents with different professional backgrounds. Sometimes the disciplines are more obvious, mainly in the fields of history, ethnology, ecology, engineering, English and management. And the number of people who emphasize the same professional background must not exceed two. In scientific research, it highlights the research in the fields of tourism economic analysis, eco-tourism, tourism anthropology, etc., and published the textbooks and monographs of "Tourism Economic Analysis", "Ecological Tourism" and "Tourism Anthropology" in China, and used its own Advantages, focus on the so-called practical research, that is, actively participate in the planning, design or related planning of tourism. Based on the characteristics of tourism as an emerging discipline, teachers are encouraged to “discard” their original majors, “close” to tourism, and improve and train themselves in the preparation of textbooks. The specific approach is to take the road of characteristics. Teachers' familiarity with their research fields is accomplished by being in the industry. Professor Tian emphasized to the author that the idea they advocated was that scholars are both critics and more important participants and builders, but not bystanders. In terms of foreign contacts, the School of Business Administration and Tourism Management of Yunnan University has established extensive communication platforms with MIT, Cornell University, University of Hawaii, University of Salisbury in the United Kingdom, and University of Waterloo in Canada. It also has extensive business contacts with the World Tourism Organization, the Asian Development Bank and the Ford Foundation. In addition, the author also visited the famous eco-tourism expert Ms. Yang Guihua, Ms. Yang is currently the dean of the Department of Tourism Management, and also a doctoral tutor. The professor who graduated from Peking University in his early years explained the eco-tourism model she understood to her in the research practice of Shangri-La's eco-tourism in Northwest Yunnan. In the conversation with Professor Yang, I learned that the English requirements of the university students of Yunda Tourism Management must pass the sixth level, otherwise they will not get a university degree. Of course, the qualification for re-examination is retained. During my stay in Kunming, the author also talked with Ms. Wang Shili, a professor of history at the School of Humanities of Yunnan University for Nationalities and a member of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee of Yunnan Province, on the topic of tourism culture, which benefited the author.
On May 23, with the help of Zhang Xiaoyun, a third-year student of Tourism Management at Zhejiang University, the author first met with Dr. Guo Yi, Assistant Director of the Senior Management Training Center of the School of Management. In the conversation with Dr. Guo, the author learned about the management of Zhejiang University. There are four departments under the College, namely, Department of Business Administration, Department of Management Science and Engineering, Department of Tourism Management, and Department of Agricultural Economics and Management. Among them, there are 23 Institutes of Tourism Research and Hotel Management Research Institute under the Department of Tourism Management. According to Dr. Guo, the strength of their department is the management of tourist hotels, which often receives and trains practitioners from famous restaurants in the country, especially tourist hotels. In view of their development momentum, the university leadership has specially formulated preferential policies for the tourism management department, namely, upgrading the tourism management department to a tourism college in foreign exchanges. The so-called "one team, two brands". Under the introduction of Dr. Guo, on May 24, the author visited Dr. Zhou Lingqiang, deputy dean of the Zhejiang University Tourism College and deputy director of the Tourism Research Institute. Dr. Zhou introduced the development of the tourism management department to the author in detail. According to Vice President Zhou, the Department of Tourism Management of Zhejiang University developed rapidly in 1980 on the basis of the first batch of China's first tourism management university department in the National Tourism Administration. As early as 1990, it had the first in China. A master's degree in tourism management. The Department of Tourism Management aims to cultivate middle and senior tourism management talents, education talents and scientific research talents with both ability and political integrity. The main research directions are tourism management, tourism hotel management, travel agency management, tourism resource development and planning, and tourism scenic area planning and management. There are 29 professional teachers, including 4 professors, 12 associate professors and 13 lecturers. Among the main academic backbones are 2 doctors and 12 masters. During the conversation, Vice President Zhou spoke highly of Beijing Forestry University, especially the Garden College. He said: "We believe in the level of your North Linda University, so accept the students recommended by your campus Lin College." The author knows that he refers to Zheng Conghui, a student who is recommended to study in the tourism management profession of our school. On May 25th, the author also met with Professor Zhou Yang, deputy director of Zhejiang University Tourism Research Institute and tourism geography expert, at the Zhejiang Daily News Building. Although this meeting was the first time the author and Mr. Zhou met, the two talked about the topic of tourism. I heard that the author will go to Shanghai for the next day. He enthusiastically recommended to the author several travel scholars who should meet in Shanghai.
On May 27th, in Shanghai, the author met Ms. Liu Ling from the School of Resources and Environmental Sciences of East China Normal University. Prior to this, the author knows that Professor Liu is an expert in tourism environmental science and has a book entitled "Research on Tourism Environmental Carrying Capacity". Through the introduction of Ms. Liu, the author has met Dr. Li Shan, a tourism GIS expert at the Tourism Planning Research Center of the school, and discussed the topic. During the conversation, the school's tourism management major was set up in the business school, so the author went to the business school to find their person in charge. The situation was: in 1989, the former State Education Commission approved the establishment of tourism education, officially established in September 1992. In the Department of Tourism, according to the unified regulations of the National Education Commission's professional catalogue, the professional name is changed to tourism management. In 1994, the Department of State's Degree Office approved the establishment of a master's degree in tourism economics. In 1998, according to the newly revised unified professional catalogue, the professional name was changed to tourism management. At present, there are 15 teachers in the department, including 3 professors, 7 associate professors and 6 lecturers. Both the university department and graduate students have a major in tourism management.
On May 28th, the author went to Fudan University to understand the situation and knew that their tourism management major belonged to the history department. Interestingly, although it belongs to the Department of History, it is also known as the Department of Tourism. At present, there are 9 teachers, and at the same time recruiting university students and master students in tourism management, but the scale is not large. During the conversation, they learned that their strength is tourism culture. Professor Xia Lingen, who is planning to meet, is also a researcher at the Shanghai Tourism Development Research Center. He is also the secretary-general of the Shanghai Tea Culture Research Center and the vice chairman of the magazine Discovery. He is an expert in Chinese culture and tourism, but unfortunately catches up on a business trip. Failed to meet.
Through this investigation, I feel that the author has gained a lot. It has broadened the horizon and has grown knowledge. Now summarize the following points in a rough way.

1. The tourism management professions are mostly developed on the basis of the original superiority background, and each university has its own characteristics. For example, Yunnan University was originally established on the basis of English majors, and later merged with business administration, combining strengths and strengths to achieve rapid development.
2. The enrollment of university students in tourism management is restricted by the overall development of the school, and the number of students is not large. For example, Zhejiang University can only recruit about 50 people in one session.
3. The curriculum is basically 1/3 of the original background professional class, 1/3 of tourism, and 1/3 of public class.
4. The faculty is generally strong, and the five universities examined have the lowest number of 9 and the largest number of 29.
5. Yunnan University has a doctoral degree in tourism management.

This visit received strong support from relevant parties in the College of Landscape Architecture. The author would like to express my gratitude!
