Reason for investigation

Fuxing School, located in Lixin County, Fuyang District, Anhui Province, was established in April 2000 by three young people who are interested in rural education. In July 2001, after a series of operations, a preparatory committee consisting of seven volunteers led by Hengli was established. The school was formally registered and signed a trusteeship agreement with the local government to take over the Lidong County Lidong Middle School. Prior to this, the original founder of the Fuxing School, local villager Yang Hua, had left the Fuxing School. In August 2002, due to the intensification of some contradictions in the school, Yin Yongchun, another founder of the Fuxing School, left the Fuxing School and opened a new school in Luhu Village, Gaogong Town, Guoyang County. Continue to practice the ideal of revitalizing rural education; in April 2003, Zhao Zhixiong, who remained in the renaissance school among the three founders of the school, eventually left the school.
These divisions and turbulences in the renaissance school have brought very negative consequences to the rural schools created by volunteers in the desire to "rise for China and rejuvenate the nation."

We also visited the Fuxin School in Guoyang County twice. In this school, which is full of volunteers, we also launched a survey similar to that in Fuxing School, and together with Yin Yongchun, the establishment of Fuxin School. Investigation

On the evening of December 12, I took the train from Shanghai. After arriving in Fuyang on the morning of December 13, the “cross-country” took more than an hour. Near noon, I finally arrived at Zhangcun Town, Lixin County, Fuyang City, Anhui Province. Revival school.
There is a tall sycamore tree at the entrance to the school, showing the school's long history. But the strong contrast after entering the school shocked us. The school building has been in disrepair for many years, the walls of the classroom are dilapidated; the windows of the classroom have no glass, only the broken plastic cloth covers the wind and the wind; the indoor ground is uneven, the desks and chairs are very old; the outdoor playground is very messy and the environment is mixed. The school feels very dilapidated, and the management situation gives people a bad impression.
On the afternoon of the arrival, we attended a discussion meeting with local teachers. The conference was hosted by the Pansy, and was lectured by the teachers of the Yangpu District Junior High School and the lemon of the Minjin Love Club. After the meeting, we conducted some individual interviews with more than 10 local teachers and students.
The predecessor of Fuxing School was the county Jidong Middle School established in 1942. In July 2001, after the volunteers' preparatory committee consisting of seven people including Hengli and the county education committee signed 30 years of use and management rights, they were renamed Fuxing School.
The school had more than 500 students at the time, and there were 226 students in the school (including two classes in the first and second day, and a class in the third day). At the beginning of the school, volunteers and local teachers shared the responsibility of teaching. At present, there are 16 teachers, all of whom are local teachers. The teacher's salary is the local teacher's monthly salary of 500 yuan per person from the government education department. Fuxing School has no volunteers since April 2003. The day-to-day management of the school is represented by the former vice president of the school, Zhang Huashan.
After dinner, we had a deeper exchange with Pansy and other volunteers. It is believed that the current conditions for the school of Fuxing School are generally difficult, whether it is the welfare of school buildings, volunteers and teachers, and the study of students. Living conditions are quite difficult. At the same time, I learned that Yin Yongchun, another founder of the Fuxing School, opened a new school in Luhu Village, Gaogong Town, Guoyang County, and decided to go to the Fuxin School in Guoyang County the next afternoon. Look.

On the afternoon of December 14, we came to one of the first three founders of the Fuxing School. Yin Yongchun, a graduate of the Peking University Law School, visited the Fuxin School, which was founded after the Fuxing School.
Fuxin School is located in Luhu Village, Gaogong Town, Guoyang County, next to Lixin County, about 10 kilometers away from Fuxing School. We bumped for about an hour and a half on the muddy road to the Fuxin School.
In the place 100 meters away from the school, you can see the five-star red flag flying on the roof of the school and enter the campus. The environment is simpler than the revival school, but the active students in the school and their activities are displayed. The spirit of the appearance is a kind of vitality that can be clearly felt.
There are about 180 students in Fuxin School. There are 14 teachers in the class, of which 10 are actually teaching tasks, all of whom are volunteers. Three other volunteer teachers are appointed to help teaching at the nearby Linhu Middle School.
We randomly interviewed volunteer teachers and students there, and visited the teachers' quarters and classrooms of all grades.
The classroom windows here also have no glass. The same plastic paper covers the wind and shelters the rain, but the plastic paper here is neatly arranged, and it does not give the feeling of being broken due to the broken windows. The spirit of being meticulous under hard conditions is very close to the face of the students here.
Many rules and regulations in the classroom are written by the students themselves. We found that the strict work schedule does not put pressure on the students. The students’ desire to learn from the heart makes them very willing to follow these words written by themselves. Posted regulations.
Almost none of the desks and chairs in the classroom are the same. Although the desks and desks are uneven, they are well organized, and the books and stationery on the desk are neatly discharged. The simple platform, the desk, the desk, and the newspapers all left the words of students and teachers encouraging themselves and urging people to go up. The mottos written by those students may have some grammatical errors, but they dare to think, dare to write, dare to learn, and dare to practice the style that makes us feel a little motivated.
The teacher's dormitory may be said to be rudimentary. Yin Yongchun’s bedside posted an ink-and-wash landscape. I heard that he was a personalist. He couldn’t talk about painting skills. Maybe he just talked about his own paintings in the dim room, but the spirit of the landscape itself was expressed outside the skill. of.
The relationship between teachers and students in Fuxin School is harmonious. The teachers here are all composed of volunteers. Each person receives no basic living expenses of 200 yuan per month. There is no income, and the corresponding ones are 20-30 lessons per person per year. Volunteer teachers have a passion for teaching life. One of the teachers we interviewed graduated from Zhejiang Normal University last year, and has been a volunteer teacher for more than a year. She and her students seem to be more like friends.
The students are very lively and very happy to communicate with us outside. In the conversation, whether it is a middle school student or a high school student, we find that they are very sympathetic and respectful to their teachers and have a very high learning enthusiasm.
On that day, the students spontaneously went to the school to help the teachers organize the campus together, and together they smashed the playground that was softened by the rain. They will also organize some collective activities on their own rest days. I will come to the school regularly on Sunday afternoon to communicate and communicate with my teacher about learning and living, and to sing, dance, and celebrate together. On that Sunday, we met a singing party in the middle school. Our landscape monarchs were invited to participate in their activities, and also performed a piece of the national opera's copper hammer face sing "Shangtiantai" on the spot.
In the poorly furnished principal's room, we carefully read the school uniforms posted on the wall, and felt that the school in a rather rudimentary and arduous teaching environment is moving towards a school with clear system, clear objectives, and relatively advanced teaching methods. The road is really hard.
Returning from the visit of Fuxin School, everything we have seen makes our thoughts difficult.

On the morning of December 15th, the landscape monarch was entrusted by the club to re-enter the new school, to see the teaching situation on the spot, and to donate 500 yuan to the new school on behalf of the club, to install the glass window of the classroom, and to renovate The teachers and students of the school bought a live sheep to let the teachers and students of Fuxin School beat the tooth festival. It also shows that the club pays tribute to the young volunteers who can continue to practice their ideals in life under such a difficult environment.
The landscape monarch took some photos of the Fuxin School and listened to the teaching methods there. There is a way of education that is different from the usual teaching mode. Inspiring and inducing the students' own thinking and making them feel fun in learning is exactly what the volunteer teachers are trying to achieve.
The lunch of teachers and students at Fuxin School is surprisingly simple. There is only 3 yuan/day for each student and teacher. The students bring some miso from home. Perhaps the students have become accustomed to such a life that many people, including me, can't stand, but they have clear learning goals and their own ideals of life. At the same time on the morning of the 15th, I loved China and the pansies and lemons and went to the education office of Zhangcun Town to visit the leaders of the local township office to discuss and exchange some school management matters. In the afternoon, I met the king of Lixin County in charge of education. The deputy magistrate and the relevant leaders of the County Education Bureau conducted some communication work.

Summary and discussion

In fact, the reason why we are interested in the Fuxing School and the Rehabilitation School is that the school-running model in which the volunteers run the school completely independently and teaches is unique in the country. It is a great miracle that the Fuxing School and the Rehabilitation School can survive to the present. No one can deny how hard it is for the volunteers to work hard and maintain the normal functioning of the school in the absence of material conditions.
Renaissance and rehabilitation, the two schools have different modes of running schools and their differences. Judging from the current situation, the re-newing school that Yin Yongchun later founded seems to be more successful in teaching practice and school management.
We conducted a more in-depth investigation and analysis of the school-running methods of the two schools and the problems that occurred during the schooling. It is found that although the two schools are currently in a difficult situation, the problems they face are very different. After fully listening to the local teachers, students, local county and township government leaders, as well as the volunteers themselves and other visitors to the peers to introduce and reflect the recommendations. We have drawn some preliminary conclusions.
We found that the key issues of the renaissance school are concentrated in the management of the Preparatory Committee and the resulting series of contradictions; the key to the rejuvenation of the school lies in material preparation and financial difficulties, and many of its school-running models and teaching models are desirable. Fuxing School 1. The Preparatory Committee has not yet established a set of practical school management regulations, nor has it formed a systematic plan for the school policy and development direction. Because there is no practical system guarantee, the management of the school is basically in a disorderly state;
For example, the school's financial system is equal to the blank, the tuition fees received are not recorded, the cash is spent, the receipt and payment are unfounded; the use and management of public equipment is disordered.
Second, there is also a lack of a reasonable system for the management of volunteers. The recruitment, training and use of volunteers are lack of management. As a result, the volunteers are too mobile and the level is uneven. Not only does it not promote the quality of rural teaching by absorbing high-quality volunteers, but it also seriously interferes. The original teaching order has caused a decline in the quality of teaching;
For example, volunteer teachers are moving too frequently. In the two-year period, 4 headmasters have been changed. In the same semester, the volunteers in the same class have changed the most. The teacher has changed the most. The student turnover is serious, from 500 in the early school. More than 200 people fell.
Third, there is a great problem in the communication between the volunteers and the former Yudong Middle School teachers. This situation also exists between the Preparatory Committee and the volunteers, as well as between the Preparatory Committee and local teachers; due to the different cultural backgrounds, the teaching methods are also very different, and there are no clear institutional norms in terms of responsibilities, rights and obligations. Under the circumstance, all parties act subjectively according to their own will, and because they do not pay attention to working methods and attitudes, thus causing the accumulation and intensification of contradictions;
For example, volunteers and local teachers basically do their best in teaching methods and working methods; the main responsible person of the Preparatory Committee lacks understanding of education and lacks due respect for local teachers;
Fourth, the Preparatory Committee is less than promised, but cannot fulfill it, and unilaterally blames local teachers and volunteers for the responsibility of financing difficulties. The Preparatory Committee itself has not been able to form a feasible solution to the problem of financing, and it has relied too much on remote management, and the simple work style of leaving the local situation has led to further deterioration of the contradictions between the two sides;
For example, the Preparatory Committee generally convene meetings on the Internet, lacking on-site office work; there is no specific system for the appointment and removal of major personnel such as principals, and the tendency toward human governance is more obvious.
5. It is difficult for the Preparatory Committee to implement the corresponding management functions at present.
For example, at present, 5 of the 7 members of the Preparatory Committee have been missing for nearly two years; the volunteers have basically been exhausted; the local government also believes that the Fuxing School is “a full stop”.

As a third mode of running a school different from the state-run and private schools, the pioneering significance of the renaissance school as a volunteer school is undeniable. Although it is still too early to say that the model of the revival school has completely failed, in practice If the problem is not resolved in time, it is indeed worrying. The existing situation has seriously affected the teaching, the teacher's absenteeism is obvious, the classroom discipline is chaotic, the student's learning objectives are unknown, and there is a lack of interest and enthusiasm for learning. The local government has no volunteers to undertake teaching tasks in the past year, and lost and the Preparatory Committee. In the case of direct contact, it is believed that the practice of running a volunteer in Fuxing School has come to an end.

The rehabilitation school of the Fuxin School seems to have avoided many of the management problems of the Fuxing School.
Although it has not been approved by the government departments, the students of Fuxin University can obtain the nationally recognized student status and participate in the national unified entrance examination.
In the teaching practice of Fuxin School, the school's various rules and regulations are relatively complete, including the system of assessment, use and management of volunteers. It is also basically formed in practice, and is recognized and implemented by volunteer teachers and students. .
Volunteer teachers have a strong sense of responsibility and have an imaginative teaching passion.
Due to the clear learning objectives of the students, the enthusiasm for learning is very high and the work is very hard. The students here are generally students who are left behind from other schools, but here their progress is obvious.
It should be said that the current school management and teaching situation of Fuxin School is satisfactory and moving. Perhaps the most urgent need at present is to prove the success of its educational practice with the actual progress of higher education.
But after moving, we still have to make a summary of the problems that exist in Fuxin School.

1. Fuxin School is currently difficult to maintain.
The tuition fee it collects is only half that of other local schools, but the subsidies for all volunteer teachers and the addition and maintenance of teaching facilities are only paid for from the unreasonable tuition income; for more than a year since the establishment of the new school, the outside world The total amount of donations to him is about 5,000 yuan, including 500 yuan donated by the club. In the absence of other sources of income, there are real problems in its existence;
Second, the school of Fuxin School has not been recognized by the local government education department.
Due to the impact of the problems of the renaissance school, Yin Yongchun’s school is not allowed to officially run a school. The Fuxin School is currently similar to the illegal school-running state and lacks the necessary influence to qualify for formal schooling;
Third, it seems that there is still a lack of feasibility of promotion.
Although Yin Yongchun and his followers are working hard to practice their own ideals, they have produced very good results for students in practical teaching. But it is undeniable, because of the lack of extra time to summarize, and the lack of necessary funds to support, their teaching model is still very strong personal, and still in the exploration stage, lack of systematic planning.
4. Volunteers lack actual material security.
Although the volunteers who have been able to stay in Fuxin School have been thoroughly tested and have gained the recognition of local students with their own abilities, how long they can persist and how to persist is very confusing.

It can be said that the current survival of the Renewal School is more dependent on Yin Yongchun's personal charm, and those volunteer teachers who devote themselves to rural education, changing the current situation of rural education, but the congenital deficiency in material preparation will be directly Affect the survival and development of Fuxin School.
