The power of persistence: changing Google’s intern
In 1999, Google was just established. Since Google's engineers are all technology-oriented, Google headquarters hopes to find someone to improve Google's homepage style. Although this is just a matter of seemingly insignificant, such as adjusting the text size and font size, in the eyes of Google founders Larry and Sergey, improving the home page is very significant for Google.
Later, Larry and Sergey selected Meyer. Meyer holds a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University and has also studied linguistics and psychology, but Meyer has no work experience and is only an intern at Google Meyer. Larry and Sergey issued a command to Meyer: Just improve the Google homepage and don't try to change any of Google's ideas.
Meyer started his own work, and at the end of the year, Meyer launched a major change to Google's web design: a new glyph. After many investigations and analysis, Meyer finally decided to adopt the serif Verdana font. Before Meyer came to Google, Google used a serif font, but Meyer found that the font without serifs was more convenient and quick to check the search results. After changing the font of the Google homepage one day, Meyer went to some afternoon tea with some engineers.
However, a few hours later, when she returned to the office, she found that the whole Google had fallen out of the sky because of one of her actions. Meyer was subjected to many fierce protests and even severely criticized by Larry and Sergey. However, Meyer insisted on his own judgment and argued.
Since no one could convince Meyer, Google finally invited 16 college students to go to the Stanford University Gates Building for testing. The company sent four staff members to observe their behavior. Google has arranged for two college students to share a computer so they can talk and communicate with each other.
The Google staff divided the 16 college students into two groups, one using a serif Google and the other using Google without a serif. Testers were asked to use Google to find answers to some trivial questions, such as where the next Olympics will be held, how to eat fruit after a meal, and so on.
When these college students enter Google's website, it is obvious that the group with serifs spends a lot of time looking at the home page and then waits. 15 seconds passed...20 seconds...45 seconds... Google staff asked what they were waiting for? Their answer is: Wait until the rest of the page is loaded. This is because Google, using serifs, has noticeably slowed down the search results.
The other group of college students quickly found the answer because they used Google without serifs.
The results of the test prove that Meyer's improvement is very beneficial to Google, and it can enhance the user's affection for Google. Finally, the whole Google is celebrating to Meyer, so she was the first intern to improve the Google homepage, and what Meyer didn’t even think of was that Larry and Sergey appointed her as Google’s homepage chief designer. It’s never been done at Google.
If when all the people of Google object to Meyer and Meyer chooses to give up, there will be no miracle in which an intern is appointed as the chief designer, and if Google does not give Meyer a chance to test it, then There is Google today. Google is not so much a chance to give Meyer, it is better to give yourself a chance.
